The REV Review of the 2025 BMW M2 G87

The REV Review

Overview

The 2025 BMW M2 is the last of a breed — a compact, rear-wheel-drive coupe with a proper twin-turbo straight-six, still offered with a real manual gearbox. In its updated G87 form it now makes 473 hp from the S58 engine shared with the M3 and M4, and channels every one of them to the rear axle alone. It is unapologetically old-school, in the best possible way.

Behind the wheel the M2 feels compact, alert, and endlessly adjustable. The short wheelbase lets it dart into corners, the straight-six pulls hard all the way to the redline, and — unlike almost everything else in its class — you can still have it with three pedals. This is a car built for drivers who want to be involved, not just carried quickly from A to B.

Cabin & Tech

Interior

Inside, the M2 blends BMW's latest curved display and iDrive software with heavily bolstered M Sport seats that hold you firmly in place through hard cornering. The cabin is snug and unmistakably driver-focused, with carbon trim, the two red M buttons on the steering wheel, and — remarkably for something this focused — a genuinely usable rear seat and boot.

Material quality is strong throughout, and the optional carbon bucket seats shave weight while looking the part. The digital instrument cluster and head-up display keep the important numbers in view, and the standard equipment list is generous for the segment. It is a serious performance cabin that still works as a daily driver.

The M2 is the last M car you can still order with a manual gearbox — and that alone makes it special.

Exterior

The G87 M2's styling is polarising and proud of it. Boxy, wide-hipped and squared-off, it trades the curves of older M cars for an aggressive, almost brutalist stance. Flared arches, quad exhausts and a deep front splitter leave no doubt about its intent.

Recent updates sharpened the front-end detailing and lighting, and a broad range of M colours and forged-wheel options let owners lean into the car's character. It is a shape that looks far better in the metal than in photos — purposeful rather than pretty, and all the more striking for it.

The Verdict

Summary

The 2025 BMW M2 is one of the most engaging performance cars on sale — compact, powerful, rear-driven and available with a manual. It is not the most comfortable or the most subtle car in its price bracket, but for sheer driving involvement it is very hard to beat. As the last of the analogue M cars, it is already a future classic.

4.7/ 5 — based on extensive review and experience with this vehicle.
